Little Swimmer

We introduced Mia to swimming right when she turned 6 months.  We’re lucky to have a great neighborhood pool close to the house, plus a membership to the indoor one at Tech.  Being from Florida, swim skills are extremely important to me and I want to make sure she is comfortable around water and is [...]

shoot

Maddie: Why did you say “shit,” Daddy?
Me: I didn’t…I said “shoot.”
Maddie: Shit!
Me: Shoot! It was shoot! We don’t say the other word.
Maddie: Then why did you say shoot?
Me: Because I parked in the wrong place…somewhere I wasn’t supposed to park.
Maddie: Daddy can’t park!
Me: Yeah, I’m [...]

Jumperoo

Miss Short Stuff is finally tall enough to touch the floor and jump in her jumperoo!

by air and by sea, to see a newly minted 4-year-old

Wednesday afternoon, I rode in a Cessna Skyhawk from Honolulu, over Molokai, and onto Maui.  After we landed, I learned my new friend had never landed at Maui before, because his instructor told him it was the most difficult runway in the U.S. to land a private plane, since the winds come off the ocean [...]

6 months!

I know what you’re thinking … “Um, is this thing on?” I’ve been busy, y’all.  BUSY I tell you!  Doing, er… stuff!  Yeah, raising a kid and all.  Mmmhmm.  It’s sort of the predicament when one of my non-parent friends asks what I’ve been up to – you know.  Stuff.
But the big news is we’ve [...]

real estate fail

This is where our 2-month-old sleeps.  Because we can’t sell our house.
I’m thinking this will turn out well for her in later years, however.  Besides the obvious character building she’ll get from staying in a closet for the first several months years of her life, I can see the following scenarios down the road, too:
Tween [...]

the importance of staying small

Maddie:  Why do you want me to stay a little girl, Daddy?
Me:  What?  What makes you think that?
Maddie:  Mommy told me.
Me:  Oh.  Well then it must be true, right?
Maddie:  Mmm hmm.  But I can’t stay a little girl, because I’m already a BIG GIRL!
Me:  Well, you are bigger now than you used to be, that’s [...]

The Story of the Avocado

Okay baby, let’s do this!

Sure, I’ll give it a try.

Gah! Wait, no no…

No, seriously. Do not want.

WOMAN, get that crap away from me!

Now THIS is what I’m talking about.

Awww yeahhh

Breastfeeding 101, the “duh” and “duh-er” version

As a new mom, breastfeeding was the single most daunting task to me.  You can prepare and practice other things all you want with a (borrowed) baby, but you don’t exactly lactate until the real deal happens.  Luckily for me, she latched on perfectly and we never had any problems.
Traveling around with a breastfed baby [...]

Nonplussed about shopping

An Underestimation

Lately I feel like I’ve been caught off guard with the baby, as if I haven’t been paying attention or something.  I can’t help but see (or, rather, miss) that she is learning new stuff at the speed of light.  When she started rolling over, it was really just one roll in one direction.  Yet [...]

i’ve never been happier to be wrong

The unexpected baby I announced in November before telling any friends or family came Saturday. The one whose gender I publicly lamented. The one for whom I lay awake every night last week wondering if she’d come or not and worrying if she’d interrupt my life too much.
Then, when the contractions got 5 [...]

4 months

We hit a bunch of milestones this month with the little pumpkin.

The good:

Push ups
Rolling over
Sitting up (assisted)
First solid food
First LOL – yes, literally

The not-so-good:

Pinching & beard pulling
First ear infection & croup
Rolling over and getting appendages stuck in the crib slats

Dish

I don’t know what people were talking about (the loads and loads of laundry after having a baby).
All I’ve noticed is that we do a lot more dishes.
