Ever feel like you were born in the wrong decade? As soon as I was old enough to attempt my own “style” (somewhere after Chic jeans and before senior portraits), I looked to the past for inspiration. Louise Brooks, Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, Katherine Hepburn, these were my style icons. No I was not popular in school. I grew up in Virginia Beach, where Roxy rules the day, dude. No offense to my surfer friends, Roxy has some seriously cute dresses, and surf shops will forever remind me of home. But I was not a surfer girl. Probably has something to do with not liking the water, swimming, or tanning.

Of course, my fashion lens to the past may have something to do with the decades I grew up in: the mid 70s to the 90s, probably the worst style decades, ever. We went from bell bottoms to shoulder pads to oversized t-shirts that said, “Can’t Touch This” in neon letters. By contrast, the styles of the 1920s up through the 60s and a bit of the 70s pretty much kick ass. By the way, 80s fashion is considered “vintage” now, so those of us who grew up watching Punky Brewster can feel really old right now.

Apparently The Suicide Girls and I aren’t the only ones who appreciate fashion oldies but goodies. The Satorialist has been running this vintage photo contest over the past few weeks. The Satorialist is, by far, the best fashion blog out there because it covers people on the street who are just workin’ it on their way to Whole Foods and whatnot. Kind of the opposite of the What Not to Wear page in the back of magazines. It’s run by Scott Schuman, who left his career in fashion sales to take care of his daughter in 2005. His photographs capture classic style on the streets of NYC, Paris, Milan and other places he can apparently afford to jet off to on a regular basis.

I’ve wanted to do a profile on Kaitlin Olson, who plays Dee on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, for months now; but she’s not a mom and I really try to stick to the mama theme on this site. But now, that’s all changed, because…

Surprise bitches! Sweet Dee is pregnant.

Well, technically Kaitlin Olson is pregnant, but how amazing would it be if they wrote her pregnancy into the show? I would LOVE to see a pregnant Dee. Or a spin-off with her as a mom. That would be seriously funny. Always Sunny guys: I’m totally available to write for this show. Did I mention I’m Irish and well-versed in dysfunction?

Olson is married to Rob McElhenney, the creator/producer of the show, who writes, directs and plays the role of Mac. The mama-to-be told People magazine, “Rob and I are so excited, it’s stupid.”

Sweet Dee is my favorite member of the gang. This “Day in the Life of Kaitlin Olson” video is hilarious.

In case the Drunken Deceptacons video wasn’t proof enough of my ridiculous tendencies, I pieced together more evidence for you. The Always Sunny in Philadelphia website has this widget that allows you to put together a one-minute trailer for the show. So, naturally, I thought this would be a great use of my time and creative energy. Karen Elson is one of those artists who likes to dabble in lots of creative outlets. She was modeling and performing with The Citizens Band, a political cabaret group, when she met her hubby Jack White. White produced her album The Ghost Who Walks due out this summer and also directed her debut video (source: Pitchfork). The mama of two also owns a vintage boutique shop in Nashville called Venus and Mars Vintage.

Holy crap, I’m one of those old people with band patches from decades ago!

Would I look totally ridiculous if I sewed this patch on my jeans?

I don’t freaking care if I do look ridiculous. I have to act fast or my favorite jeans will be no more.

And then I looked at that nasty hole in my jeans and said, “I’m about to get crafty on your ass.”

And so I did. It’s not perfect, and if you look at the sewing from inside the jeans, it’s a hot mess. But, I’m proud of myself for being somewhat domestic. I even took a picture of myself with the end result. Notice the urban graffiti background to enhance the rock-n-roll jeans experience. This was taken near the infamous Krog Street tunnel in Atlanta.

Isabella Rossellini is ballsy. She is an actor, model, writer and mother, whose career choices are character driven and reflect a wide range of female personalities, which is not easy for women to accomplish in Hollywood. Early on, we knew her as gorgeous and deranged in Blue Velvet and in recent years, she proved to be light and hilarious in guest appearances on Friends and 30 Rock.

Isabella’s latest project called Green Porno is a quirky example of thinking outside of the Hollywood typecasting box. It’s a series of short videos where she portrays the mating rituals of animals. She writes, produces and acts in these videos that are featured on the Sundance Channel. Rather than play grandmotherly roles in big budget films, Isabella has dedicated her efforts to these educational shorts, which help raise awareness for the environment and show appreciation for the creatures that walk, feast, and mate on this earth. As I said, she’s ballsy. It takes guts to dress up as a squid and talk about ink squirting from your anus. Then again, she is a mother, and we can be pretty stinkin’ brave. Because once you’ve shit on yourself in childbirth with a camcorder or camera capturing the blessed event, embarrassment is no longer part of your lexicon.
